This talk chronicles twelve years of trying to track down and acquire newspapers for the American Antiquarian Society. This includes attempting to find files of newspapers still held by newspaper offices, finding at-risk newspapers in historical societies and libraries, and other opportunities to build a 200-year-old collection. I will also highlight things learned in library school that were useful, as well as things learned on the job. The last part of the talk will consider the future of newspapers in collections, microfilm and digitization projects, and what the American Antiquarian Society will be doing in the years to come.
Chasing the Dumpster. 12 years of trying to save newspapers was presented by Vincent Golden, Curator of Newspapers and Periodicals at the American Antiquarian Society, on Tuesday, September 9th, 2014.
